On 19th June REYHER officially opened its new high bay warehouse. Under the motto ‘double-decker logistics’, with 100 guests, the Hamburg trading company celebrated a new dimension in intralogistics. For the first time a 42m high new building was constructed with two warehouse blocks, one above the other – proving both a technical and logistics masterstroke.

Dr Peter Bielert, CEO at F. REYHER Nchfg GmbH & Co, explained: “With the building of the new double-level high bay warehouse, and integrated office building, we have made the largest single investment in company history. More than €30 million has gone into this project.”

The innovation has been realised in close cooperation with the intralogistics service provider SSI Schäfer, and is an important building block to utilising the limited space REYHER has available at its inner-city location. To build upwards makes the company’s logistics highly efficient. By building the new warehouse, which is operated using cutting edge logistic systems, REYHER has increased the number of pallet bays from 60,000 to 100,000. The picking and packing capacity from the pallet store has also been increased by a further 30%.

“I personally know of no comparable project in the market, with such high dynamism and complexity,” said Rudolf Keller, CEO at SSI Schäfer – Reyher’s long-term logistics partner – at the opening ceremony. “Two high bay racks one on top of the other is a unique set-up,” added Volker Tschirch, CEO of AGA – the employers’ association, in his welcoming address. He also thanked REYHER for the especially active long-term role it has played in the association and emphasised the company’s involvement in initial and in-company training. Prof Dr Peer Witten, chairman of Hamburg Logistics Initiative, also expressed congratulations for this fine piece of logistics in the heart of Hamburg, with particular reference to the multistorey facility. It is always difficult in a large conurbation like Hamburg to develop logistics areas. Building high certainly provides interesting options.

Finally, in his keynote speech Prof Dr Wolfgang Kersten from the TU Hamburg-Harburg pointed out ‘trends and strategies in logistics’ that companies should take note of in our digital times. Alongside establishing completely new professions such as data scientists, it is important to develop the right digital business models. “We have had intensive cooperation with REYHER for many years,” said Kersten. “The company is permanently developing innovation and is, as far as logistics is concerned, best Placed for the future”.
