Ottawa, October 21, 2025 — The Government of Canada has announced tariff relief on select steel and aluminum products imported from the United States and China. The move aims to support domestic industries affected by trade tensions with both countries.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the amendment to the 2024 Surtax Remission Order grants duty exemptions for specific steel and aluminum products from China that are not produced in Canada. The order took effect on October 15, with further implementation details to be released on November 5.
In addition, some U.S. steel and aluminum products related to public health, national security, manufacturing, agriculture, and food packaging will also be exempted from tariffs.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the remission process is intended to protect downstream industries and maintain supply chain stability under exceptional circumstances.
This targeted tariff relief reflects Canada’s efforts to balance trade relations with both the U.S. and China while mitigating domestic economic pressure.
